A disaggregate approach to economic models of voting in U

چکیده
By examining disaggregate state-level data, we address two weaknesses of prior estimates of economic voting models in U.S. Presidential elections. First, our disaggregate approach substantially improves statistical power, thus reducing the danger of “overfitting.” Second, our analysis demonstrates systematic differences in voting behavior across states, which have been ignored: voters in higher-income states respond significantly to inflation, changes in the Dow-Jones stock market average, the number of terms the incumbent party has held office, and measures of national security concerns, yet voters in lower-income states respond significantly only to economic growth. Our forecasts for the 2008 U.S. Presidential election predict a statistical dead-heat overall, but a systematic preference for Senator John McCain in lower-income states and for Senator Barack Obama in higher-income states. The authors acknowledge helpful comments for Bob O'Brien, and excellent research assistance from Kiwako Sakamoto. An improved approach for ranking the candidates in a voting system based on efficiency intervals
This paper proposes improvements and revisions to a recent approach in a voting system, and provides an effective approach with a stronger discriminate power. For this purpose, the advantage of a linear transformation is utilized to redene a previously used concept of virtual worst candidate, by incorporating the existing weight restrictions. Then, the best score of this virtual candidate is us...
متن کاملARDL Approach to the Demand for Disaggregate Imports: the case of Iran
In this article, demand equations for import of consumer, intermediate and capital goods for the period 1971(2) to 1999(1), is estimated and analyzed, using the ARDL Pesaran & Shin method. The results show that the behavior of the different categories of imported goods in Iran is best explained by the parallel market exchange rate, implying this rate is a closer approximation fir the opportunit...
متن کامل‘BALANCING AND SEQUENCING’ VERSUS ‘ONLY BALANCING’ IN MIXED MODEL U-LINE ASSEMBLY SYSTEMS: AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
With the growth in customers’ demand diversification, mixed-model U-lines (MMUL) have acquired increasing importance in the area of assembly systems. There are generally two different approaches in the literature for balancing such systems. Some researchers believe that since the types of models can be very diverse, a balancing approach without simultaneously sequencing of models will not yield...
متن کاملFinal Analytical Comparison of Aggregate and Disaggregate Mode Choice Models Transferability
Transportation models as tools for transportation planning are critical to such related decisions. Considering the high cost of calibrating and validating such models, effective alternatives are highly sought for; one such alternative being the use of models calibrated for other cities. This calls for transferability analysis which has not been the subject of many researches. Due to criticalit...
متن کاملA New Voting Model For Groups With Members of Unequal Power and Proficiency
To proposing a voting model for groups with members of unequal power and proficiency, we present some models for rank ordering efficient candidates, by extending the ideas of some authors. Then, we propose a new methodology to rank the ranking models for the performance indices of only DEA efficient candidates based on a classical voting model. Also, an approach for combining the results obtain...
